Our school meals service aims to provide good quality nutritious food for children in Shropshire schools. Our highly skilled staff work to menus and recipes compiled by dedicated catering professionals to ensure that meals are as nutritious and consistent as possible across the county.

The service provides meals to over 100 primary schools and 15 secondary schools in Shropshire.

In addition we provide catering services to a total of 76 sixth form colleges, independent schools and schools in North Wales, Telford, Herefordshire, Cheshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

We serve around 17,000 meals per day in Shropshire with a further 8,000 per day in neighbouring counties. In total we employ around 1400 staff and a support team of:

  • area managers
  • supervisors
  • catering managers
  • financial and administration staff
  • health, safety and training staff

Meal prices for the school year 2014-2015 range from £2.00 to £2.35.

Schools are now responsible for their own budgets for school meals, and therefore often have menus tailored to their own requests. The new menus aim to reflect the extensive research that's been conducted with headteachers, pupils and parents, and to meet the School Food Standards. Our Primary School 'Shropshire Standard' menu give an idea of what we offer.

Menu items have been analysed using the ‘Saffron Nutritional Analysis System’, software which monitors the levels of nutrients present in food.

The school meals service prepares and cooks its meals in traditional kitchens without the use of mass production or reheating processes, and sources its ingredients as locally as possible. Meals are nutritious and designed to meet the government’s standards for all 14 main nutrients, including carbohydrate, fat, protein and fibre. In addition:

  • meat and poultry products used on the menus are sourced from within the UK, with many coming from Shropshire and the West Midlands. All of these products meet the ‘Red Tractor Assured Food Standards’ criteria
  • eggs used in schools, which are all free range, are from farms in Oswestry and south Shropshire
  • salmon fish products used on the menu are produced in Britain, and meet the ‘Marine Stewardship Council’ standards
  • pork meatballs, sourced from the UK Foodhall in Shrewsbury, are made from British pork, and meet the ‘Quality Pork Standard’

Primary school menus include an increase in the use of:

  • fresh fruit and vegetables
  • seasonal and local produce
  • local fresh meat and poultry
  • non-refined carbohydrates
  • healthier cooking methods

and a reduction in the use of:

  • processed foods
  • food additives
  • fat, sugar and salt

Shropshire School Meals Service provides high quality catering services to the majority of Shropshire's secondary schools, as well as schools in North Wales, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

We work continuously with all stakeholders to provide a customer focused service, and we pride ourselves on our quality, choice and customer care when delivering school meals.

Our services include break and lunchtime menus, and we offer both a tariff-based cafeteria service at lunchtime and a traditional set meal option. We provide our meals from traditional kitchens without the use of mass production or re-heating processes, and source ingredients as locally as possible.

New menus and foods are continually developed and aim to reflect the extensive research that has been conducted with headteachers, pupils and parents. Meals are designed to meet the government’s School Food Standards for all 14 main nutrients, including carbohydrate, fat, protein and fibre.

Shire Services provide food safety training for their catering staff who work in schools, colleges and other establishments throughout Shropshire and the surrounding counties.

Places on these courses can also be offered to other catering staff within Shropshire Council, and to external organisations and catering establishments.

All food safety courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
